Truly funny!
In years, this was the best show I've seen! I had two 8 year old girls with me as well. We had all read all of the books and were huge Harry Potter fans. The show is a perfect combination of silly and clever. I laughed so hard that I was actually crying and occasionally had to shush my daughter because she just couldn't stop giggling. Although it is much more enjoyable if you do, of course, there are certainly great portions of it that you can enjoy even without knowing a lot about Harry Potter. Hopefully, if they don't know of the book, it will be meaningless to kids anyway - 1 actor sat reading and reacting to 50 Shades of Grey, but it was not out loud. There was only a spot or two where I cringed, knowing I had 2 young boys with me.
